Strange things are afoot at the circle k

btw. this is index.php not our 404 page

How old do I need to be to lead on a CRU Camp?
You need to be at least 16 years old (and preferably 2 years older than the campers you intend to lead).

How do I apply to lead?
1. Fill out our online Expression of Interest form.
2. Once your interest form has been received and checked, we will ask you to complete a full leaders application form and, pending approval, connect you with a camp director.
3. Once accepted, you will need to complete Child Protection Training and Government Child Protection legislation requirements.

Please note: To make sure we have great leader to camper ratios and keep camp costs down, we ask volunteers to cover about 40% of their cost. A leader sponsorship fund exists to help leaders for whom this fee would be prohibitive.

Am I required to complete a ‘Working With Children Check’?
Yes, you will need to complete the working with children check form and requirements. Information on how to do this is included in the online application process. If you fail to complete these steps, or are not cleared, you will not be eligible to volunteer on a CRU Camp.

Can I choose what camp I lead on?
You are able to nominate the camp you would like to volunteer on when you fill in the Expression of Interest Form. We will then pass your details onto the relevant director if they require volunteers. While we cannot guarantee availability on your nominated camp, or that the director will accept your application, we do try to place all suitable leaders on their requested or similar camps.

Does Crusaders provide insurance cover for leaders?
If a volunteer is injured whilst traveling to or attending a camp and requires medical treatment that is not covered by Medicare or personal health insurance, Crusaders or Crusaders’ insurer will most likely be able to cover the costs provided the volunteer was acting in accordance with established guidelines. Cover is not provided for personal property except in specially arranged circumstances.

Can attending a CRU Camp count towards my Duke of Edinburgh award?
Being a camper or leader on a CRU Camp is a great way to achieve the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Residential Project requirement. It’s always best to check with your supervisor to make sure the particular camp meets the exact requirements. You’ll also need to talk to the camp director at the camp in order to have your record book completed.

Safety is paramount on all CRU Camps. Part of making sure kids and leaders are well looked after is to ensure that there are at least two trained First Aid Officers on every camp and qualified Bronze Medallion supervisors at every water activity.

The first aid course involves pre-reading and a one day practical training course and assessment.

  • At the end of the day you will have a nationally recognised qualification: HLTFA301B APPLY FIRST AID
  • This qualification is valid for three years

These courses are run a number of times each year.

“I honestly never imagined a study camp to be so fun and enriching” – Isobel

Can I bring my laptop on camp?
Yes, however The Crusader Union of Australia takes no responsibility for personal property taken on camps.

Whilst Crusaders does everything we can to ensure that security of your belongings is a priority, you take full responsibility for its security. Please take the below steps to limit risk:

  • Bring a desk lock and your own power board and extension cord
  • We strongly encourage you to insure your laptop as a portable item, especially if you plan to take it to uni/TAFE/work with you next year
  • Do not bring any laptop bags with broken zippers or attachments
  • We also request that you backup or have cloud storage for your hard drive before you come to camp
  • Co-operate with leaders requests to sign in and lock away your laptop or tablet in non-study times

Can I use the internet on camp?
To minimise distractions, full internet access is not normally provided. Please make sure that you have downloaded all research and resources necessary before you come to camp. Please be aware that some of the camp sites we use are in remote locations and internet USB/smart phone tethering may have limited or no coverage.

What does a day on a Study Camp look like?
Camp programs vary dependent on site schedules, but all camps include at least 6 hours study on each full day of camp. See our Typical Study Camp Day for a general overview.

Can I receive assistance with my study?
Each CRU Camp is run by a Christian leadership team which includes teachers, uni students and full-time workers with a wide range of expertise, graduate and post-graduate qualifications. Our leaders are committed to helping you achieve your study goals and think about post school life! Leadership teams and qualifications vary between camps. While we aim to cover a broad range of subjects, we can’t guarantee what areas will be covered on each camp.

Are IB students able to come?
Definitely! The main focus of camp is to maximise independent study and IB Diploma students often use the distraction free time to complete and gain feedback on their extended essays. In addition, assistance is provided by leaders in a range of common subject areas. A selection of camps each year may offer specific IB assistance and on every camp the leadership teams of university students, teachers and other graduates are able to give general assistance and essay feedback.

Can I be in the same cabin as my friend/s?
During the registration process, you can nominate the names of friends (of the same gender) as preferred room mates. Camp directors use these preferences to guide the cabin allocations. If multiple campers are listed as room mate preferences, it may be difficult for directors to ensure every request. Of course during camp the Camp Director reserves the right to separate campers for disciplinary reasons if necessary. Even if your friend has not yet registered, you can nominate them as a room mate, however this does not guarantee their place on camp.

How far in advance do registrations open?
We open CRU Study Camp registrations online two school terms in advance (e.g. bookings for winter will open at the start of term 1). You can also sign up for email updates, or ‘like’ us on Facebook to keep up to date with everything that is happening at CRU Camps.

Can I attend another event during Study Camp?
If you need to leave camp early or arrive at camp late, or leave camp for any period of time, you must bring a signed permission note from your parents addressed to the Camp Director. We also require that you notify the CRU Camps office before camp via this online form. No discounts are available for partial attendance at camp.

The camp I wanted to attend is full! What can I do?
You can either register onto the waiting list or register for a different camp. See our Waiting List Questions for more details.

My friends are on a different camp. Can I transfer to that camp?
Yes, subject to camp availability and our Booking Terms and Conditions. A $50 transfer fee applies. Transfers are not permitted within 14 days of the original camp start date, and must be within the same camp season.

Can I drive myself to camp?
Yes, however you will not be able to use your vehicle during camp unless prior parental permission has been given to leave camp to attend another event.

My child can no longer come to camp, can a friend/sibling take their place?
Unfortunately this is not possible. If you need to cancel your child’s spot, we must offer their place to the next camper in line on the waiting list. If there is no waiting list and there is an open spot on camp, the friend or sibling can register (however there will still be a cancellation fee charged for your child).

Can I transfer my child from one camp to another?
Yes, subject to our Booking Terms and Conditions. A $50 transfer fee applies. Transfers are not permitted within 14 days of the original camp start date, and must be within the same camp season.

Why do camp prices vary?
Each camp program is unique and as a result prices vary according to the activities included, duration, numbers of participants, accommodation type and associated costs. Be assured that at all times we seek to provide you with the best quality programs at the lowest possible prices.

Does a childcare cash rebate apply?
Child Care Cash Rebates no longer apply to our camps due to changes in qualifying factors set by the government.

Is financial assistance available?
We don’t want any child to miss out on the CRU Camp experience. We can arrange Payment Plans to allow families to pay camp fees in installments. Plus a Sponsorship Fund exists to help families who are struggling financially to send their children to camp. You can apply for sponsorship online or by contacting our Bookings Coordinator on 02 9874 8933 (option 1).

To give other children the opportunity to experience a CRU Camp, please consider donating to our Sponsorship Fund during the registration process or click here to donate now.

Is it safe to pay online?
CRU Camps uses industry standard encryption security technology for online transactions. As a result, our systems do not store your credit card information. For more information, please view our Security Statement.

What online payment methods are available?
Our online registration process only allows payment via credit card. For all other methods of payment you will need to register over the phone or send in a registration form via mail or fax.

Can I pay for camp in instalments?

What sort of food will my child eat on camp?
We provide plenty of food and a variety of options within each meal to suit different tastes. Breakfast has cereals and hot food courses are normally offered, lunch may be a hot or cold meal, and dinner has a hot main meal and dessert course. Salads and/or vegetables are available at all lunches and dinners. Morning and afternoon tea usually consist of baked snacks with fruit, and supper is provided at each camp’s discretion.

Do you cater for children with special dietary requirements?
Yes, please provide a comprehensive list of dietary requirements when registering your child onto camp. We are able to cater for most children with special dietary requirements, such as vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose intolerance. In certain circumstances, parents may be required to provide special food for their child to bring to camp. Please view our Medical and Dietary Concerns page for details.

Can you take care of my child’s special medical requirements?
Part of the camper registration process is to inform us of any medical conditions or requirements your child might have that could impact their camp. Our First Aid officers are equipped to administer medication as stipulated by you at registration.

How are medical incidents dealt with on camp?
Every CRU Holiday Camp has at least two Senior First Aid qualified leaders who will deliver first-response treatment in the event of an injury or illness. A decision is then made about whether further medical attention is needed and if the camper needs to visit a medical centre or hospital. The Camp Director will contact you as soon as possible if outside medical attention is needed for your child and if any major incidents occur involving your child.

Will I be contacted if something goes wrong with my child whilst on camp?
The vast majority of campers have a great time on CRU Camps, although they may go through some highs and lows along the way – it’s all part of the learning experience. CRU Camp leaders will deal with any minor incidents/concerns in the first instance, and these can usually be resolved within the camp environment. The Camp Director will contact you if there is a significant health issue or medical incident, or if there is an emotional issue which cannot be resolved on camp. Remember – over 95% of campers indicate on surveys that they love camp so much that they want to go on another one!

Are the leaders trained to handle emergencies?
Every CRU Camp has at least two qualified Senior First Aid officers on team to offer immediate assistance where necessary. The Director of each camp has medical and emergency contact information if required. CRU Camps also have a doctor on call throughout each holiday season to offer advice if needed. CRU Camps staff monitor emergency warnings and take precautions in the case of hazardous events.

What if I don’t know the date of my child’s last tetanus booster?
If you can’t recall the date of your child’s last tetanus booster, please indicate this on the registration form. If your child requires a tetanus injection during camp, the Camp Director will contact you. If the date of your child’s last booster is unknown, the hospital or medical centre practitioners may give the injection as a precaution.
